For the first time in several years, UCLA Lab School alumni gathered at the school for an All Alumni Reunion. Nearly 400 people attended, and the entire campus was open for the May event.
The Dean of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, and Principal Norma Silva welcomed the attendees back to the school.
Alumni and former faculty and staff reminisced about their time at UCLA Lab School and were able to reconnect with old friends. Speaker Betsy Brown Braun (’60) shared her memories of when she was a student back when the school was known as UES. Also an alumni parent, she talked about how UCLA Lab School teachers help students become “independent, resilient self-starters who care about the world,” and she encouraged young alums to be “guardians of our school and its history.”
Guests enjoyed delicious food from the Los Angeles-based BBQ restaurant Barrel & Ashes and visited iconic spots on campus, such as the Redwood Forest and the Bridge. Current students were on hand to talk to attendees about the different projects going on in the classrooms.
Lori Quon (’80) and Andrew Weiss (’84) created a slideshow and photo display highlighting alumni from across the decades, which guests could view in the newly renovated Gregg G. Juárez Community Hall. One alumnus even brought a unicycle, giving people the opportunity to ride around campus!
Leading up to the All Alumni Reunion, there were decade-based reunions for the 1970s and 1980s. Marc Selwyn hosted the 1970s reunion at his home in the Hollywood Hills in 2015, drawing a crowd of nearly 50 alumni and former staff. The 1980s reunion in March 2016, hosted at the school by Weiss and his spouse, Stephanie Weiss, also had a good turnout with about 60 people in attendance.
The recent reunions are all part of UCLA Lab School’s new initiative to reconnect alumni with each other and the campus. If you would like to help us in our efforts by updating or confirming your contact information, please reach out to us at email@example.com or at (310)825-1996.
