Summer School

Registration for the Summer program begins in February.

Faculty

Summer School teachers are UCLA Lab School faculty during the regular school year. They are an innovative, dedicated group whose goal is to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in a global society. They bring expertise from teaching in a variety of settings, both public and private, urban and suburban. In addition to advanced degrees, many have extensive knowledge in content areas related to elementary education. They are demonstration teachers who share their craft and commitment in education with fellow educators who visit from across the nation and abroad.

Classes

A variety of fun and interesting classes for children entering Kindergarten through sixth grade are offered each year, including: Summer Science; Puppetry and Plays; Rocketry; Story, Song and Play; Math Around the World; and School of Rock.

Teachers design classes to actively involve children in the learning process and create experiences that are memorable and fun. They make sure that the curriculum is always relevant to the children's lives by using everyday materials in a real-world context.

Environment

Our teachers respect each child's uniqueness and provide a nurturing environment that fosters empathy, acceptance and respect for all children.

The lab school campus offers a relaxing, peaceful setting, with several play yards and a Redwood Forest.

Multi-Age Grouping

Our teachers are experts in working in multi-age classrooms. They use a variety of grouping strategies that allow them to draw from students' strengths and provide reinforcement to expand each child's abilities.

Technology

Teachers are highly experienced in integrating technology into the curriculum. The class descriptions tell which classes specifically use our Macintosh computers and provide access to the Internet.

Resources

As part of the UCLA community, Summer School students may take walking field trips to points of interest on campus. Trips may include the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, and the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden. Additionally, classes may enjoy special visits from UCLA professors who share their expertise in their field of study.

Field Trips

An additional fee will be charged to cover the cost of bus transportation. All buses will be required to have seat belts. Field trips are listed in the class descriptions. Some field trips may have an additional admission fee to that particular event.

Gonda Family Library

The Gonda Family Library is open from 8 a.m. to Noon. Children and their families are welcome to visit the library and read during those hours. Books do not circulate during the summer session.
