Classroom Designed for Hands-on Learning

The newest addition to the UCLA Lab School campus is a classroom in the upper building that embraces the school’s philosophy of the environment as “the third teacher.” Completed in 2021 and fitting in with the historical and award-winning campus architecture by Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander and Barton Phelps, the design supports and reflects the school’s pedagogical approach.
A window wall overlooking treetops provides fluidity between indoor and outdoor space and connects children to nature and the larger community. Skylights bring in abundant natural light. Open spaces encourage children’s inclination toward movement. Simple, aesthetically pleasing materials allow for children’s interests, experiences, and works in progress to emerge.

The project was funded by donations from a small group of dedicated parents and school community members, said Principal Georgia Ann Lazo. “We are tremendously grateful to our donors for helping us realize our vision and for offering this gift to our students and teachers. The classroom completion and the spirit of community that made it possible are truly cause for celebration,” she said.
