Before School

Instrumental Music Program
(ages 7–12+)

The UCLA Lab School Instrumental Music Program is directed by Children’s Music Workshop Director Larry Newman; classes are taught by Children’s Music Workshop music instructors. There is no separate fee for students to participate. However, some non-instructional costs may include music books, music supplies and the purchase, lease or rental of the musical instrument. Instrument rentals and sales are available at special discounted rates for participating students.
The program culminates with a gala spring concert performed in the renowned Schoenberg Concert Hall on the UCLA campus!
    • Instruction begins in the fall and runs until the end of the school year
    • Classes meet Monday through Friday, 7:25–8:10 a.m., on days that school is in session
    • Students are eligible to participate beginning in their second year of Primary
For information, see the Children’s Music Workshop website.

    After School

    Extended Day Program
    (ages 4–12+)

The Extended Day Program (EDP) at UCLA Lab School provides after-school care integrated with the school’s approach to educating the whole child.

The program is structured but also allows for children to make many of their own decisions about how to spend their time. Activities include music, art, science, sewing, cooking, dramatic play, computers, sports, board games, and more.

    • Our Extended Day Program Philosophy:

      • We believe that all children deserve opportunities to feel good about who they are and to practice care and respect for others.
      • Our goal is to provide a strong sense of community, an appreciation of each child’s own cultural and ethnic diversity, an awareness and validation of feelings and needs, and ways to manage conflicts.
      • We see opportunities to teach problem-solving strategies in daily conflict.
      • We model acceptance and inclusiveness of all families.
    • Fees are based on full-time enrollment (Monday–Friday)

    • EDP Daily Schedule

The daily schedule includes group time for the younger children. We believe this is essential to develop a community that works together. All older children begin their afternoon with outdoor playtime and a snack. This provides an essential opportunity to wind down and talk to friends and teachers.

A homework room is available for children in Intermediate through Upper. Although we are not a one-on-one tutoring program, we try to give as much assistance as we can. Whenever possible, we have UCLA student interns provide additional support. It is your responsibility as a parent to check your child’s homework at night. Let us know if your child is not completing his or her work during this time.
    • Parent Teacher Communication

We know parents have concerns and questions. We do our best to be available to talk at the end of the day, but please also feel free to call, email, or send a note. We also can schedule conferences with those who are interested.
    • Late Pickup Policy

We reserve the right to ask a family to leave the program after three late pickups. We also charge a late fee. We know that arriving on time can be a problem for working parents, but your child’s Extended Day teachers also have obligations after work and need to leave at their scheduled times. Each family should have an outside backup or emergency plan in case a parent cannot pick up on time.
    • Emergencies

You will be required to provide the school’s main office with a list of people who are authorized to pick up your child in the event of an emergency. Please notify us if you make changes to your list of emergency contacts.
    • Payment

The Extended Day Program is supported entirely by fees, which pay for everything from salaries to supplies and snacks and are in addition to school tuition. Fees are divided into 10 monthly payments, which are due on the 15th of the month beginning in August. It is essential that payments are received on time. Families receiving tuition assistance are eligible for reduced EDP fees. For inquiries, contact Marie Parks, EDP director.
