  • Being educated in a diverse environment prepares students to navigate our world and to lead.

At UCLA Lab School, we view the world through a multifaceted lens centered on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. To have this “JEDI” vision, we must continuously stretch our thinking, have difficult conversations and remain true to our core values.

Diversity is essential to our research mission and reflects our highest values as educators. All students and adults benefit from the rich mix of ethnicities, languages, identities and perspectives that make up our community of learners. We continually work to evolve our learning environment so that all voices are represented, heard and respected.

With our children and their future in mind, we are hopeful as we continue on the journey to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive world.
In October 2019, the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (JEDI) was officially adopted by the Board of Advisors, placing this work on par with the school’s other key strategic planning areas and bolstering our capacity to create positive change. The committee collaborated with Cecilia Rios-Aguilar, Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, to create pillars to frame and prioritize our work.

In the summer of 2022, we welcomed Dr. Jennifer Chatmon as Director of Curriculum, with a focus on SEL and JEDI. She functions as the liaison between the UCLA Lab School Board of Advisors JEDI subcommittee (largely parents) and our UCLA Lab School JEDI committee (largely teachers).

The pillars of our JEDI work:
  • Community
  • Curriculum
  • Operations
Our goal is to move the needle within our community and continue to share strong SEL and JEDI work within the larger educational sphere.
